World soil day 5th December

World Soil Day (WSD) is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and its aim is to emphasize the importance of cultivable soils and to promote sustainable management of soil-related resources.

This might sound surprising, but the soil is home to almost a quarter of all living creatures on Earth. And of course the food we eat every day comes from our soils. However, cultivable soils are threatened by ever expanding cities, their continuous overuse, climate change and many other harmful human activities.

Cultivable soils are at the heart of organic agriculture. Technologies and methods aimed at protecting and improving soils include returning organic matter to the soil, plant diversification, such as wide crop rotation schemes, the application of intermediary or secondary sowing, increasing the continuity of soil coverage and good soil management. With our research, we strive to contribute to the advancement of these methods and to promote their widespread use.

Agrobiodiversity Agro, bio, what? – Why is the diversity of agriculture important?

Diversity is an important thing. Maybe we have partly understood it. But do we really understand why it is so important? Of course, it’s nice to have lots of different coloured butterflies and interesting animals living around us, and of course we should protect them, but this story is about much more.
