Promoting digitalisation supporting agroecology in Europe
The Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) is the leader of the PATH2DEA project, meaning “Paving the Way towards Digitalisation Enabling Agroecology for European Farming Systems”. Altogether 20 European organizations participate in the three years long project which is financed by the European Commission and focuses on digitalisation as a tool supporting agroecology in the European farming systems.
Connection to digital tools and technologies can significantly promote the success of agroecological farming systems when fighting the many environmental, economic, health related and social challenges of today. The PATH2DEA project is committed to release the catalysing power of digitalisation in order to help the transformation of the European agriculture towards a sustainable model. The programme builds on the competences and the views of farmers, and aims to harmonize them with the wide range of digital solutions already available for agriculture. Consequently, the project’s goal is to customize digital technologies according to the needs of the users, and to promote the widespread of digital agroecological farming in the European Union and the associated countries.
Although digital tools and technologies supporting agroecological farming are already available, they are not widely used. At the same time, there are user-centred EU initiatives, networks and research projects focusing on agroecology, which not always connect properly to the solid knowledge base on digital technologies that are also usable for agroecology.
