OrganicTargets4EU - Boosting organic farming and aquaculture to reach the Farm-to-Fork targets
The overall aim of OrganicTargets4EU is to support the achievement of the organic goals set out in the Farm to Fork strategy by identifying the key drivers and barriers affecting the development of the organic sector and developing possible scenarios to achieve them.
The Farm to Fork strategy aims to increase organic farming by covering at least 25% of EU farmland by 2030. The project will assess the key drivers and barriers shaping the organic sector to create possible scenarios for achieving this goal. Increasing organic production is a question of well-functioning markets, sound knowledge, and adequate investment in research and innovation. The project will analyse the potential for increasing organic farmland and the socio-economic impacts of increasing commodity production, value chains, and markets. It will assess the drivers of demand for organic food, support extension services, identify knowledge gaps and promote the exchange of scientific and practice-oriented knowledge, and coordinate investments in organic knowledge and innovation.
OrganicTargets4EU objectives
The project consists of two main parts:
- Production and markets: the project will provide an analysis of where organic agricultural areas can best be increased and the (socio-economic) impacts of this increase in area at the level of production, value chains and trade. The project also aims to demonstrate mechanisms that can increase demand for organic food and the impact of changing diets and food waste reduction to compensate for lower yields from organic production.
- Knowledge and innovation: the project will work to develop an innovation ecosystem that supports the achievement of the F2F objectives, recognising that the expansion of planned organic areas will require significant systemic change and a corresponding approach. The project will assess knowledge gaps and opportunities to strengthen advisory services, build capacity and stimulate scientific and practice-oriented knowledge. It will increase investment in knowledge and innovation related to the organic sector through the CORE Organic network. OrganicTargets4EU facilitates multi-stakeholder policy dialogue to assess the feasibility of F2F objectives related to the organic sector and develop policy recommendations on the CAP, the EU Organic Regulation, EU and national organic action plans, Horizon Europe projects, and horizontal legislation on inputs and public procurement. Policy recommendations will be made for the short-term (until 2027), for the next policy reform (from 2028) and for the financial framework beyond 2030.
