Diversification through rotation, intercropping, multiple cropping, promoted with actors and value-chains towards sustainability

This project explored and presents the advantages of using diversified cropping systems. Diversification can be achieved in several ways, like crop rotation, secondary crops and intercropping. The latter can be mixed, row cropping or band cropping.

The DiverIMPACTS project now relies on experiences from ten, already functional long term experiments on arable land, which are perfectly suited to the quantification of the effects of diversification in crop production. In addition, the project cooperates with 25 innovation groups and supports them in establishing sustainable value chains characterized by high level of diversification and new products on the market. These innovation groups encompass a wide range of actors, including farmers, advisors, food processors and researchers.

What is the purpose of the project?

  • To promote the realization of opportunities in the diversification of crop production and to support better agricultural practices, and the creation of sustainable value chains.

  • To remove barriers to diversification in crop production and to help achieve higher agricultural diversity at farm-, supply chain- or regional levels.

  • To develop useful recommendations for relevant decision markers to facilitate resource-efficient and sustainable value chains

  • To support the production and sale of healthy and delicious food products.

ÖMKi is responsible for collecting and analyzing recent experiences on the diversification of  crop plant production in Europe. It also investigates and tests new diversification techniques together with farmers. We use small-scale field and on-farm experiments to investigate the applicability of soy in crop rotation systems and as a secondary crop as well as the possibilities for developing new organic value chain.

The DiverIMPACTS project is funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Union under project number GA 727482.
